DMC 992 — Medium Aquamarine

Aquamarine at Its Most Balanced

There's a persistent minor confusion in the DMC numbering system worth addressing directly: both DMC 943 and DMC 992 are named "Medium Aquamarine." They are not the same color. DMC 943 sits in a different part of the aquamarine range — more vivid, more saturated, with a slightly different character. DMC 992 is the medium value in the 991-992-993 progression and is less vivid, more balanced, and sits in tighter relationship with its family companions than 943 does.

With that clarification out of the way: DMC 992 Medium Aquamarine is the workhorse middle value in the aquamarine family. It's where most of the area falls in any design that uses the 991-993 progression — the main body fill that anchors the shading range between the deep dark of 991 and the airy light of 993. Its specific quality is balanced: not so deep it reads as purely teal, not so light it feels washed out, genuinely aquamarine in the way that middle values at their best simply are what they claim to be.

The Ocean Mid-Zone

In underwater and ocean designs, DMC 992 fills the middle depth zone — the area that's clearly under water and has color depth, but isn't at the extremes of either shallow surface shimmer or dark abyssal depth. This is where most of the visual interest in an ocean scene actually lives: where fish swim, where coral grows, where the light still penetrates but has been filtered through enough water to shift from surface brightness toward the deeper, richer hues below.

Mermaid designs use 992 extensively for tail scales in the mid-value areas, transition sections between the deepest 991 shadows and the lighter 993 highlights. In fish designs, 992 handles the main body color of teal-colored tropical species, with 991 for shadow areas near fins and in shadow zones, and 993 for scale highlights on the lighter body sections.

Home Decor and the Coastal Aesthetic

Coastal and nautical home decor cross-stitch has been a consistent market segment for years, and DMC 992 appears in these designs reliably. Sea glass collections, seashell arrangements, lighthouse designs, beach cottage elements — all of these subjects draw on the aquamarine family for their distinctive coastal-palette character, with 992 as the primary mid-value that fills most of the teal-green area in the design.

In abstract and geometric coastal designs — the kind that translate a beach vacation into a stylized tile pattern or geometric motif rather than a representational scene — DMC 992 fills the aquamarine sections with genuine color depth. Paired with cream and white for the beach sand elements and deep navy blue for ocean horizon sections, it helps complete a color palette that reads immediately as coastal.
